Position Summary: CHAT (Curbing HIV/AIDS Transmission) is an HIV Prevention Program targeting at risk African American youth. The project uses peer to peer education and new (social) media to create and disseminate HIV/STI prevention messages. Job duties include assisting with all aspects of the CHAT Project; supervision (6 peer educators, CHAT interns and volunteers), monitoring and evaluation, developing and maintaining community partnerships, database management, recruitment, social marketing, project development and implementation, and youth advocacy. The position requires an individual that is youth-centric with a high level of cultural competence and has experience within education and/or youth organizing and some experience with conflict resolution is preferred. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred. Experience working with youth/adolescents preferred. HIV/AIDS knowledge preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Ability to schedule work production to meet timelines with attention to detail required.

Position Reports To: Case Management Program Coordinator

Brief description of the responsibilities:  Responsibilities include providing medical case management services to individuals living with HIV and AIDS in accordance with Medicaid targeted case management guidelines.  Services provided include eligibility screening and needs assessment, linkage to medical and psychosocial services, and referral and follow-up for community support services with an emphasis on treatment adherence counseling and monitoring, and the provision of health related education.

 Minimum education and experience requirements/preferences: A candidate holding a Master’s degree in Social Work or Public Health demonstrating well-developed interpersonal and assessment skills is strongly preferred.  Additionally, the ideal candidate would have experience working with HIV positive individuals or in a related health field.  The applicant must demonstrate strong written and verbal English language skills, and the applicant’s ability to speak Spanish is preferred, but not required.

The Movement, located at 4005 St. Claude Ave., is a community center that provides HIV prevention activities for young black gay/bisexual, and same gender loving men between the ages of 13 and 29. The Movement is a satellite office of NO/AIDS Task Force that provides:

- On and off-site rapid HIV counseling, testing and referral
- A young gay/bisexual men’s social networking program
- One-on-one counseling for individuals who are struggling to adopt or maintain risk reduction behaviors
- A drop in safe space for young gay/bisexual men,
- A Youth Advisory Board that oversees the development of The Movement.

In Louisiana, Black and African Americans make up only 32% of the state’s population but account for 74% and 78% of all new HIV and AIDS cases respectively. In 2010, of the new HIV diagnoses among African Americans in Louisiana, 47% are men who have sex with men, this rate increases to 57% when looking just within the city of New Orleans.

The Movement, a program of NO/AIDS Task Force, was created to bring a new approach to HIV prevention to address these statistics amongst the black gay/bisexual community in New Orleans. The Movement is funded through a five year grant from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), to work with and mobilize the community to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in New Orleans.

Office hours: M-F 9:00-5:00.
MPowerment Project drop-in hours: Wednesday from 4-9pm for gay/bi men ages 13-29.
HIV counseling, testing & referral: Mon: 5:30-8:30pm, Wed: 1-3pm, and every 3rd Saturday of the month from 12-2pm.
