Where to Dine Out For Life: No Passport Required

We know that some of you prefer your food a little more worldly and exotic. Maybe you’re well-traveled or you like your food a little spicier, or you want to practice that foreign language you’re learning from that pirated copy of Rosetta Stone you just downloaded (don’t worry, we won’t tell). It doesn’t matter the reason, we’ve got lots of wore worldly options for you, and with cuisine so varied it’s like having a passport full of stamps.

Barcelona Tapas: This little tapas spot is tucked away in the Riverbend on Dublin St. With a menu that features hot and cold tapas of the regular and vegetarian varieties, as well as garlic tomato breads and “Barcelona canoes,” this charming restaurant is sure to transport you across the ocean to Spain.

Jagerhaus: Can’t get enough of Oktoberfest? Jagerhaus is the place for you. Specializing in German cuisine with a peppering of items from Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and France, it’s like going on a European tour without leaving the French Quarter.

Jung’s Golden Dragon: We’ve all know that there’s Americanized Chinese food, and authentic Chinese food. This spot on Magazine Street boasts some of the best of both types in the city. The food you’re used to in Chinese restaurants is top-notch, and there’s few other places in town where you can ask for a real Chinese menu that features things such as jellyfish and ox tongue, which we hear are cooked superbly as well.

La Thai Uptown: It may seem a little counter-intuitive, but eating spicy food when it’s hot out actually makes you feel cooler. Since it’s July in New Orleans, La Thai Uptown sounds like a perfect destination. With a great selection of Thai curries and a broad menu full of fresh offerings, both spicy and mild, it’s a great way to beat the summer heat.

Mondo: Susan Spicer’s newest endeavor, located in Lakeview, offers “flavors of the world with a New Orleans accent.” Chef Spicer says, “Mondo is the restaurant I’ve been wanting to open for years . . .” I think that pretty much says it all. Why wouldn’t you go here?

Sake Cafe Uptown: High-quality, fresh sushi, an extensive menu of rolls and Japanese cuisine, and an awesome happy hour every day. It’s also a great destination for groups, considering you can get a literal boat-load of sushi.

Vega Tapas Cafe: New Orleans original tapas restaurant. Vega features both authentic Spanish tapas and some newer innovative dishes. But you can get two countries in one visit. Chef Glen Hogh is running his Taste of the Mediterranean summer special right now, and for Dining Out For Life you’ll also be able to try a Moroccan tasting menu and some Moroccan wines.
